Walk under the sails in the morning, climb the arch in the afternoon, then finish in The Rocks where the lanes are still cut out of convict sandstone. These three carry more travellers than anything else in the city.

The exterior is free and photographs itself. The paid hour takes you into the Concert Hall and the Joan Sutherland Theatre, which you cannot otherwise see without a ticket to something. Departures shift around whatever is being staged that day.

Inside the Opera House
From the ferry the shells read as one white curve. Up close they are more than a million glazed tiles in two shades, cream and off-white, laid so the building changes colour through the day. The Concert Hall inside is brush box and white birch, built for two and a half thousand people, and the tour you get depends on what is rehearsing.

Vivid from the water
